DIY Bumper Pull Horse Trailer Conversions

Hello there, and welcome to hunton.keepsmart.ca if you haven’t been here before.  If you haven’t been here before, this is a blog from of “Confessions of a Hunting Couple” and the link above will give you a little bit more information about Karolina and myself.  We have been learning a lot as we go, related to hunting and camping, cooking game meat, etc. and want to share that info realistically with anyone who is also moving through a similar lifestyle.  This particular section of our blog is related to a new project, our Bumper Pull Horse Trailer Conversions.

Bumper Pull Horse Trailer Conversions

Having ourselves and three young kids makes getting out into the bush a little bit of a logistical task.  The kids love getting out, abd that involves bringing all the tenting gear etc. for any length of stay. Well given that we have a quad with a mini-trailer as well, makes transporting all of that (5 people, Quad, mini-trailer, and camping gear) in a pickup a little bit difficult. This has inspired us to DIY our own toy-hauler/simple camper, that can simply be hauled and detached already set-up.

Horse Trailer Conversions are the Economical Answer

What we very quickly discovered was that cargo trailers seem to sell for incredibly high prices i our area.  Even used cargo trailers seem to push the envelope of close to $10,000 for anything half-way decent.  On the other hand horse trailers seem to be fairly common, living in the prairies.  Combined with the fact that they are common, they are also a niche market so the prices seem to be more realistic, allowing you to find horse trailers in good shape between $4,000 to $6,000 for 14 foot to 16 foot lengths.

The End Goal of our Horse Trailer Conversions

This is the first entry of what will become many.  Through this section of our blog we will show you the progress we make, as well as provide tips and tricks, not to mention our reasoning for certain decisions.  We plan on taking a 14 foot bumper pull horse trailer and through a very simple DIY approach, make it functional as a Quad hauler, while being capable of sleeping 3 young kids, and 2 adults.  We also will have an indoor toilet option, some basic power access, and a small area for cooking.

The goal isn’t to make a fifth wheel style living accommodation, but rather to haul our toys, and allow us the comfort of off the ground and sheltered bedding, sheltered eating areas, an emergency toilet, and some of the little luxuries that come with electricity.

If you are looking at doing this yourself, feel free to follow along with us to see what we have learned.  Maybe take some of the ideas yourself, or maybe get some ideas as to what you don’t want to do.  We will probably be updating images on Instagram and Facebook as well, so feel free to Like us and follow our journey.

All the best,

Scott and Karolina
